社会主義国家として独自の歴史を歩んできたキューバ社会の現実を背景に、少年チャラと教師カルメラの関係を通して“生きづらさ”と“希望”を描いた作品。

貧困と劣悪な家庭環境に身を置かれているチャラは、素行の悪さから再教育校への送致が検討されてしまう。しかし、担任教師のカルメラは、チャラを単に問題児として扱うのではなく、一人の子どもとして向き合い、彼が抱える事情に寄り添い続ける。

「教育とは何か」「子どもを守るとはどういうことか」という普遍的な問いを投げかける。

Set in the vibrant yet harsh reality of Cuba. Chala, a boy living in poverty and a broken home, is labeled a “problem child.” Facing the threat of being sent away to a re-education school, he finds hope in one person: his teacher, Carmela.Instead of following the rules to punish him, she chooses to understand him. She sees a child who needs support, not a trouble-maker who needs fixing.

This masterpiece asks us universal questions: “What is true education?” “What does it mean to protect a child?”
